Forgiveness and a Warning: the Abdullah Family’s Message on Drugs, Alcohol and Responsibility

In February 2020, four children from the Abdullah family – Antony, Angelina, Sienna, and cousin Veronique – were killed when a car, driven by Samuel William Donaldson, who was intoxicated with alcohol, MDMA, and cocaine, mounted a footpath in Oatlands.

The 7NEWS Spotlight program (screened on 18/8/2025), documents the aftermath The parents Danny and Leila Abdullah chose forgiveness over hatred. Their act of compassion stunned the nation, showing extraordinary strength, faith, and humanity.

The Abdallahs show that forgiveness doesn’t erase pain; it allows life to continue with purpose. Their advocacy through the i4Give Foundation and “i4Give Day” transforms private grief into collective healing rituals.

The children’s father’s meeting with Davidson illustrates how compassion and accountability can coexist, even amid profound loss. Far from abstract tragedy, their story is a vivid reminder of why society must confront the glamorisation of drugs and alcohol.

Danny Abdallah powerfully voiced this sentiment in court:

“I blame society for teaching kids that drugs and alcohol are cool. Because of this culture, I have buried half of my children.”

“Forgiveness is not about excusing what happened—it’s about refusing to be destroyed by it,” said Danny Abdullah. “But we cannot ignore the reality that substance abuse kills. We need to face this as a community.”

The Abdullahs’ response has become both an inspiring example of compassion and resilience and a stark warning. Substance abuse continues to devastate families across Australia, and the Oatlands tragedy is a painful reminder that every alcohol and drug-fuelled act of recklessness is preventable.

The family is calling for a stronger national conversation about responsibility, prevention, and the need for education around the harm caused by alcohol and illicit drugs.
